The Mystery of the Loess Slope Beach and the legend of "Treasure from Nanman"

The Loess Slope Beach is formed by natural landslide and located at the southern end of Peijiawan Township in this county. According to the "Continued Textual Research": "In August of the third year of Ming Longqing (1569), the Loess Hill collapsed into beach." The beach is about 800 acres and the land is fertile with full harvest. It is rich in sorghum, corn, millet, and reed leaves (Zong Ye). The local people think that the beach has strange phenomena: 1. The ground of the beach increases continuously after silt, while the dam and weir increase simultaneously, and it never becomes full; 2. Every time a mountain torrent erupts, there will be floods in the beach, but it will seep immediately. There are no holes left, and the water enters the ground without knowing where it is going; 3. There is a clear spring on the beach, with a fixed rising water level, which will not drop due to drought and flooding. If you scoop out several loads, it will soon rise to the original water level; 4. The high-quality reeds produced will not be rancid for a long time.

There is a legend of "Nanman’s taking treasures" among local people.

According to legend, a long time ago, Jiuniu Mountain in the Loess Plateau was connected to the nine mountains, and there was a living treasure—the golden cow. After being discovered by the "Nanman" master and apprentice who traveled here, he prepared to take the golden bull. The nine farming cows borrowed by the master and apprentice set up an altar at night with four firebricks next to it. The master stood in the middle of the altar and asked his apprentice: "I enter the water and quickly hand the bridle into my hand after reaching out." Then he drew his hair, drew his sword, and muttered a word. There was a roar in an instant, and the Jiuniu Mountain burst into a lake of ink. His teacher jumped into the water, and soon stretched out a huge red hand. His apprentice was horrified and forgot the master's instructions to hand over the halter. After a while, a thunderbolt was heard, thunder and lightning, and the lake dried up into a beach. Now the flood is self-seeding, which were sucked away by all four firebricks. The golden bull hadn’t been taken away, and the sound of the bull can be heard vaguely at sunrise and sunset.
